The picture ends with a strong, numbing sequence that states its case with haunting succinctness. Aptly flavoring the entire picture, along with the stunning island scenery, is a dirge-like tune tooted by a band. Wilde balances this beautifully with flashbacks of the Japanese soldiers.

The carnage and the savage hand-to-hand fighting are murderously immediate. The point is that war is hell for everybody, no exclusions, and Mr. The most striking aspect of the entire film is its tough sensitivity. Torn, Patrick Wolfe, Jaime Sanchez and the others. The fiercest fighting was on Omaha Beach where the enemy was positioned. The same goes for the generally excellent, salty dialogue and the fine performances by Mr. In May 1944, the Allies were prepared to deliver their greatest blow of the war. Wilde prods the action ahead with crisp economy. But it happens a bit too often. But even with interruptions, Mr. Wilde succumbs to the flashback technique, but he avoids over-familiarity with rapid-fire images in beautiful, almost unreal color. It opened yesterday at the Trans-Lux West and Trans-Lux East.Photographed in excellent color, the adaption by Clint Johnson, Don Peters and Jefferson Pascal of Peter Bowman's novel about Marine infiltration of an enemy-infested island takes full pictorial advantage of its exotic setting. Wilde's sixth independent production, which he filmed on a former American-Japanese battle site in the Philippines, is his best picture to date. At a time when random violence is splattering all over the screen, the actor-director-producer has meaningly incorporated it in a graphic, unflinching and honest drama of men in combat that has moments of real power.
